This is a gentle and slow-paced movie telling a story through the voices of women who are trying to find out who they are in a rapidly changing world. As both pursue their reasons for being in New York, they find themselves sharing stories and secrets, learning from one another and forging a friendship that changes them both. The whole enterprise, though, has a made-for-TV patina and tonal primness. While the 1920s aspect was fun, it needed more. Geza Rohrig fares better as the sweet German handyman who fixes her right up, even helping her solve a childhood mystery. The movie is slow and doesn’t have a real climax. Louise has the opportunity to travel to New York during the summer to train with a well-known dance troupe and Norma agrees to play chaperone with a secret agenda of her own. You’d expect some sort of scandal within that plotline, yet nothing comes of that either.
